Machine dismantling is the process of professionally breaking down heavy machinery into components that can be safely packed inside standard shipping containers for overseas transport. Why Machines Need to Be Dismantled
A standard 40-foot shipping container is approximately 12 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, and 2.6 meters tall. A mid-size excavator like a Caterpillar 336 is roughly 10 meters long with the boom extended, 3.4 meters wide with the tracks on, and nearly 4 meters tall. It simply does not fit.
Dismantling removes the boom, arm, bucket, counterweight, and other attachments from the main machine body. Each component is then wrapped, protected, and packed into the container in a configuration that fits safely and efficiently.
Our Process: From Pickup to Container
We handle the entire process. The seller does nothing except give us access.
- Pickup: We collect the machine from anywhere in the United States. Seller warehouses, auction yards, equipment dealers, active construction sites. Wherever it is, we come to it.
- Assessment: Our team walks the machine and plans the most efficient dismantling sequence.
- Dismantling: We systematically break down the machine into shippable components.
- Color-coding: Every part, every bolt, every fastener is labeled with a numbered, color-coded ribbon.
- Photography: We photograph every stage: before dismantling, during, and after packing.
- Packing and securing: Components are wrapped, protected, and secured inside the container.
- Lashing: Professional lashing prevents movement during ocean transit.
- Port and shipping: Container is transported to port and loaded for the ocean voyage.
The Color-Coding System: Our Proprietary Process
The color-coding system is what separates a professional dismantling operation from simply cutting a machine apart. Here is how it works:
Each section of the machine is assigned a color. Everything that belongs to that section gets a ribbon in that color with a sequential number. The counterweight section might be red. The boom might be yellow. The arm might be blue.
When the container arrives at the destination, the buyer does not need to remember where anything goes. Red parts go to the red section. Number 1 goes first, number 2 goes second. Reassembly becomes a systematic process anyone can follow, even without formal training in that specific machine model.
We also photograph the machine before dismantling, during the process, and after packing. These photos are shared with the buyer and serve as a visual reference during reassembly.
The Cost Advantage of Dismantling with Consolidation
The real financial power of machine dismantling comes when it is combined with container consolidation. Instead of shipping one machine per container, we pick up multiple machines from different states, dismantle them all at our centrally located yards, and pack everything into one or two containers.
For buyers purchasing three excavators from three different US sellers, the difference between shipping each separately versus consolidating into one container can be 40 to 60 percent less cost per machine.
What Makes Our Dismantling Different
Most freight companies require the seller to dismantle the machinery themselves before the freight company will touch it. We go into the seller's location, take a walking tour, and do the full dismantling ourselves. The seller does nothing.
